First and For Life

She’s there to kiss owies
and mend wounded knees …
She’ll offer you comfort
when they forget to say please.

She’ll stay nice and close
for the first day of school
and help you to figure
and learn all the rules.

She’ll read all your homework
and teach wrong from right …
She’ll be there and be proud
when you earn your spotlight.

She’ll hold onto your hand
when times are tough
and somehow she'll know
when enough is enough.

She’ll stay up all night
to commiserate with you
when boyfriend problems
have made you blue.

She’s there when you need her
(and even when you don’t)
To say "I told you so"
even when she swears she won’t.

And when you can’t find
the perfect thing to wear --
She’ll take you shopping
and help with your hair.

She’ll be there with smiles
on your wedding day
to encourage you to go
and find your own way.

She’ll hold tight to the dreams
she nurtures for you
and pray that someday
every one will come true.

She’ll be there with friendship
and a shoulder to lean on,
even when all has been said
and been done.

She sees past your faults
and forgives your mistakes …
she’ll even help clean up
that mess in your wake.

She’s there for it all
the good and the bad …
when life makes you happy
or love makes you sad.

She’ll dry off your tears
and show you how
to find a better way …
and deal with the now.

She gave you life,
you’re a part of her soul
and she’ll rarely complain
regarding that toll.

Despite her other roles,
friend, mentor or wife
a mother’s a mother -
first and for life.

She’s where it all started
and where it will end
For a mother --my mother --
is the best kind of friend.
